Frequently Asked Questions
Dermal Hyaluronic Fillers
-
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance found naturally in your skin that holds water and keeps skin plump. HA fillers, like the Juvederm family, are gels injected under the skin to restore volume, smooth lines and shape contours.Common areas include the lips, cheeks, the lines around the nose and mouth, the chin and jawline, the under-eye hollows and the backs of the hands. Different products are made for different areas, and Dr. Alonso chooses the one that suits yours.
-
Fillers add volume and smooth lines caused by volume loss. Neurotoxins like Botox and Xeomin relax the muscles that cause expression lines. Many patients benefit from both, and we can discuss which fits your goals.
-
Dr. Alonso examines your face, asks about your goals and medical history, and recommends a plan. He explains the product, the amount, the cost and the risks before any treatment.
-
Tell us about your medications and supplements.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand.
If you can do so safely, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E for several days, since they can increase bruising. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without asking your doctor.
Tell us if you have a history of cold sores, since injections near the mouth can trigger one.
Plan your event schedule around possible bruising. Avoid booking filler right before a big event.
-
Does it hurt?
Most patients feel mild pressure or a pinch. Many HA fillers contain a numbing ingredient (lidocaine), and we can also use numbing cream or cooling. How long does the appointment take?
Usually about 30 to 60 minutes. When will I see results?
Results are visible right away, though swelling can hide the final result for a week or two.How long do fillers last?
It depends on the product, the area treated and your body. Most last from several months to a year or more, and lips tend to fade sooner than cheeks or chin. Results vary, and maintenance treatments are needed to keep the effect. Will it look natural?
Dr. Alonso aims for a refreshed look that suits your face, and often starts conservatively. More filler can be added later, so you do not need to get everything done at once. Can fillers be reversed?
Yes. HA fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with the result or if there is a complication. This is a major advantage of HA fillers. -

Frequently Asked Questions
Platelet-Rich Plasma
-
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for the scalp is an in-office treatment for hair thinning. It uses a concentrated sample of your own blood platelets, which contain growth factors thought to stimulate hair follicles.A small amount of blood is drawn, like a routine blood test.
The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma.
The PRP is injected into the scalp areas where hair is thinning, often with numbing or cooling to keep the patient comfortable.
A session usually takes about an hour, and you can return to normal activities right away.
-
It is mostly used for androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair thinning in men and women), and sometimes other thinning conditions such as some types of alopecia areata. It works best when follicles are still present, so it is not a treatment for completely bald areas.
-
A series of sessions. A typical plan is three to four treatments about a month apart, then maintenance sessions a few times a year. [Confirm your protocol.]
Gradual results. Changes, if they occur, usually appear over three to six months. Many patients see less shedding and thicker hair rather than dramatic regrowth.
Results vary. Studies show a benefit for many patients, but the research uses different methods, and PRP does not work for everyone.
Mild side effects. Scalp tenderness, redness, swelling and headache are common and short-lived. Infection or bleeding is uncommon.
-
People with certain blood disorders or low platelet counts, active scalp infections, or those who take blood thinners. A consultation sorts this out.
-
PRP is generally a cosmetic procedure and not covered by insurance. There is pricing per session as well as packages for multiple treatment. Consultation will be required to discuss pricing, treatment and recommendations.
